Garbage Disposal Problems

garbage disposalWell, before you start solving any problem, I want you to promise me that you will obey the cardinal rule of “Repairing a Garbage Disposer”. That is, you will never put your hand in the hopper (down the drain at disposal)

That said, let’s take a look at the repair of this vital piece of kitchen equipment.

The crusher does not turn on (no noise)
If the crusher does not turn on and is not humming, then there is an electrical problem.

This may seem obvious, but make sure the garbage disposal is plugged in.
If connected, press the Reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it has been reset, the button will jump.

If that does not work, check if the circuit breaker has been tripped and turned off at the electrical service panel.

If the switch has not tripped and the reset button is not popped out, then it is a faulty switch or a defective trash crusher. First, locate the switch that powers the disposal unit. It should be located on the wall but maybe under the sink.

Turn off the switch on the service panel that feeds the shredder.
Replace switch.

Turn it back on at the service panel and check if the crusher is working.
If the crusher does not work and makes no noise, the trash crusher is beyond repair and needs to be replaced.

If you simply buy the best garbage disposal for the money then a lot of these problems can be avoided!
